Are you serious?

As a local, I have to say I find the excitement around Bordalsgjelet almost impressive in itself.

People apparently travel hundreds, sometimes thousands, of kilometres to come here and watch water run between two rocks. That is essentially the attraction. Water. Rocks. Gravity doing what gravity has been doing for a very long time.

Of course, tourism marketing can make almost anything sound spectacular if you use words like “dramatic”, “hidden gem” and “must-see”. But once you actually stand there, you may find yourself wondering whether this was really worth the journey.

The irony is difficult to ignore. We live in a time when people around the world are dealing with drought, floods, extreme heat and other consequences of climate change, while elsewhere people happily burn fuel travelling long distances to photograph a stream running through a narrow gorge.

Perhaps I am spoiled because I live here, but I struggle to understand the obsession.

If you are already in Voss and happen to be nearby, fine, have a look. It will not take long.

But travelling any meaningful distance specifically to see Bordalsgjelet?

That might be more impressive than the gorge itself.
